The Lions Are Now Just $3.2 Million Over the Cap

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida March 2, 2026 – With March 11th looming, the Detroit Lions started the day at $12.2 million over the $301.2 million salary cap. Brad Holmes and the Lions front office wasted no time attacking the issue with two big moves right out of the gate.

The day started off huge with news that running back David Montgomery had been traded to the Houston Texans. Though having performed admirably, he had fell into the shadow of superstar Jahmyr Gibbs, who had over 1,800 combined yards in in 2025. The two once combined to make one of the best running back tandems in the NFL, but DMo's carries had dropped two seasons in a row. The desire to be an integral part of an offence led to his desire to be traded.

The NFL does not value running backs highly, and he was only projected to be valued at a 5th round pick. Detroit managed to acquire both a 4th round select and a 2027 7th rounder on top of landing the services of Frederick "Juice" Scruggs. The former 2nd round draft pick was a team captain from Penn State and a 3rd team all Big Ten selection. He started his sophomore season at Center but was moved to guard last season where he saw only rotational playing time.

Adding Scruggs might have added some juice to the Lions decision to release Graham Glascow only a few hours later.  Center was looked at as the most important hole in the Lions 2026 season depth chart to fill. As Glascow was no longer looked at as a quality starter, adding Scruggs gave the Lions a serviceable young development Center to back up whomever they may acquire this season.

Although the Lions will still have to eat part of Dmo's salary, they will still save $3.5 million. Releasing Glascow reduced their cap hit by another $5.56 million. This leaves the Lions roughly $3.2 million over the cap, which they have to get under by March 11th.

That leaves the big question for the day. Who will be the next to get cut or traded to get the team under the cap?
